A Different Way with Betty Shelly

Individual action can create significant impact.

Since 2006, Betty Shelley and her husband Jon have produced just one 35-gallon garbage can of trash a year. Although they are Master Recyclers, Betty and Jon did not get to one can of garbage a year through recycling alone. They practice the “3 Rs” of reducing, reusing, and recycling, and they’ve added a few more “Rs” along the way.

Partner Impact

In 2018 and 2019, Ecochallenge.org partnered with Columbus Zoo & Aquarium and Calgary Zoo representing a coalition of 60+ zoos and aquariums across North America to offer Plastic Free Ecochallenge. Inspired by the Australian initiative, Plastic Free July, the two events brought together 20,478 people to take action on single-use plastics.
