Sustainability Training Topics that Strengthen People, Culture, and Impact

Digital Clutter, Real Impacts: Productivity, Energy, and the Environment

Data centers that store and sync our information require enormous amounts of energy, water, and materials to operate. In this session, we explore how digital clutter builds up, why it’s so hard to let go, and how small, thoughtful changes can reduce both cognitive overload and environmental impact. Participants leave with practical strategies - and, in workshop formats, time to take action together with a brief digital cleanup activity.

What you will learn and take away:

  • Why digital clutter builds up, and the psychology of why letting go can be so difficult
  • The hidden environmental impacts of storing, syncing, and duplicating digital data
  • Practical tips and strategies to reduce storage and lighten your footprint
  • Ecochallenge.org’s simple 1-page Digital Simplicity Checklist to help you keep the momentum going

(Workshop formats may include a guided digital decluttering activity, time to apply the Digital Simplicity Checklist, or small-group discussions to share strategies and insights.)

What Works: The Sustainability Actions That Make the Biggest Difference for People and Planet

With so many sustainability messages competing for attention, it can be hard to know which actions truly matter—and which ones lead to frustration or burnout. This session cuts through the noise by focusing on the sustainability actions with the greatest potential impact and the behavioral science behind why people adopt (or resist) them. Participants gain clarity on where to focus their efforts and how to motivate action in ways that feel realistic and meaningful.

What you will learn and take away:

  • How to distinguish high-impact sustainability actions from lower-impact or symbolic ones
  • Key behavioral science insights about motivation, habits, and sustained behavior change
  • Why information alone rarely leads to action—and what works better
  • Practical ways to support meaningful change without overwhelm

(Workshop versions may include mapping a pathway for shifting a specific individual or team-based behavior, personal reflection activities on taking action for the environment, or exploring solutions to address barriers to personal or team behavior change.)

Sustainability at Work: Connecting Daily Roles to Bigger Impact

Many employees care about sustainability but struggle to see how it connects to their specific role or day-to-day responsibilities. This session helps participants explore how sustainability shows up across different functions and decision points within an organization. Rather than adding “one more thing to do,” the focus is on recognizing existing influence, aligning values with work, and identifying realistic ways to contribute within current roles and constraints.

What you will learn and take away:

  • How sustainability connects to a wide range of roles, not just sustainability teams
  • Common barriers employees face when trying to act more sustainably at work
  • Ways to identify influence and opportunity within existing responsibilities
  • Practical examples of how small decisions can add up to meaningful impact over time

(Workshop formats may include guided reflection, brainstorming for sustainability projects or teams, or small-group discussion to explore role-specific opportunities.)

Custom Topics

In addition to our core offerings, we design custom live trainings around emerging sustainability issues and organizational needs. These sessions draw on current research and real-world examples to help employees understand complex topics and identify thoughtful, realistic ways to engage.

Examples of custom topics we’ve offered include sessions such as AI and the Environment: What Today’s Tools Mean for Tomorrow’s Planet or Cutting Through the Green Noise: Greenwashing and Sustainability Claims, among others. As with all of our trainings, custom sessions are developed through a brief planning conversation and lightly tailored to your organizational context, goals, and sensitivities.
